Audience Details & Survey

In order to make my music video, I first need to define the audience that will be viewing it. I will need to collect Demographic Information, such as:

Age

  • The music video needs to be age appropriate, people don't want to watch a music video that doesn't entertain or relate to them, so I need to establish what age the target audience is before I create my music video. For example, the difference between an Arctic Monkeys and One Direction videos. They are both Pop bands, but their music videos are aimed at completely different age ranges.

Gender

  • Gender is another factor I need to take into consideration before creating my music video, men more stereotypically enjoy videos that are entertaining, while women enjoy videos that are romantic. The example of Arctic Monkeys and One Direction's music videos also works here, as they're aimed at Males and Females respectively.

Race & Sexuality

  • While Race & Sexuality information may be useful to chose a genre, I've already chosen Elecro-Pop, so when it comes to making a music video, Race and Sexuality don't have much influence over the success of the video amongst the audience.

I also need to collect Psychographic Information, which is qualitative data, it is non-statistical and cannot be put into numbers, this includes:

  • Personality
  • Values
  • Opinion
  • Attitudes
  • Interests
  • Lifestyle

The core data that I need to collect is what sort of music videos people like to watch, and enjoy watching, for the genre Electro-Pop.

Getting a large sample of responses can be extremely hard. Some of the ways that I got responses was to find discount codes online, and place them at the end of my survey to incentivise people to complete it. I also posted a link to my survey online via Social Media including Facebook and Twitter, and sent the link to individual people.

Here's an example of one of the discount codes I used to get people to fill out the survey. I found it online by simply Google Searching "discount codes". I used Domino's and TopMan because they were two brands that I felt the target audience (16-21) would be interested in. Alternatively I could have made a prize draw at the end, but this would have cost money and might not even be that effective.

This is an example of one of the messages I posted in a group chat to raise awareness of the survey.

This is what I posted to my FaceBook to get attention to the survey. This post got a few likes and shares (interactions), which will hopefully make it show up on more people's timelines.

Unfortunately due to some people just wanting the discount vouchers, some of the responses were just spam and random text so people could complete the survey quickly and get the codes, I went through and deleted the spam/inappropriate responses, and within the first few hours I received over 60 appropriate responses. I also emailed a link to my media teachers, asking them to forward it to all staff and students.

Here's the survey. It is split up into 4 pages:
  1. Demographic Basic information about age, gender, and how many music videos are watched each week.
  2. Genre Specific A question about what the respondents would expect to see in a music video of the Electro-Pop genre.
  3. Form Specific Some questions about what the respondent likes to see in music videos, what they don't like to see, and what their favourite music video is and why.
  4. Coupons The last page had discount vouchers for TopMan and Dominos.
